How long have you been in business?
29 years
What is your primary product or service?
Twenty nine years Teaching Music Lessons to all ages. Private and group lessons available. Summer camps available by appointment.
We are a non profit community sponsored, performing arts organization. We present well established songwriters and musicians in concerts with new aspiring artists in a family oriented nurturing atmosphere. Songwriters and musicians gather together to perform and create new works in listening rooms.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I am the founding artistic director of Writers in the round. I was a poet in elementary school and became a singer songwriter and recording artist in the early 1970's. Our music teaching and music camp programs began when our community asked for lessons because music was no longer offered in the schools.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We began teaching music in our neighborhood because we were asked to. We have made it our mission to accommodate the wishes of our friends and families to provide music instruction and to create a home for their children to learn how to play, write, record and perform music from the heart and for the pure personal joy of it. We at Writers in the round firmly believe that music is best when it becomes as expression of inspired originality, enthusiasm, and spontaneity in both practice and performance. It is our goal in teaching music to keep these attributes intact in every student we teach. We feel that by allowing our students the freedom to progress at an individual pace, we will ultimately instill a love for music, whether it be for their personal satisfaction only, or in pursuit of the satisfaction that comes from public performance.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have only one location for music lessons and we prefer small and intimate listening rooms to showcase our students and seasoned performers. We work with Main Street Theater, Southside City Hall, West U Community Center, Colomial Park, Edloe Cafe, Little Matt's, Habitat House Concerts and Millbend concert Series. Women in the round tours in small listening rooms across the country.

What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
There are many to chose from at our web site Witr.org but I think that the comments from Cordt Akers and Gabrielle Heal sums it up and their quotes are on our web site. "I began my love of music at Writers in the round when my age had not yet reached double digits, and continued it until I became a staff member in my early twenties. Linda nd her staff not only taught me the mechanics of how to play but how to feel, how to express, and how to develop a passion for the art of music, specifically blues and jazz. While I am now a practicing lawyer, I never lost the passion in music that Writers in the round instilled in me at a very early age, and when it comes time for my children to begin their musical training , there is only one place I'd send them, and that's WITR." - Cordt C.
