Career Gear Houston is a non-profit organization that prepares economically-disadvantaged, job-ready men for the world of work through business-style, interview-appropriate attire, professional development, networking opportunities and other supportive services to help clients move from dependence to self-sufficieny.
Once a client is ready to begin their job search and have a pending job interview or job fair, they are fitted with appropriate attire to land a job. We also provide a second suiting experience when the client has successfully secured employment for at least a month.
Additional services included monthly networking meetings to improve the client's ability to improve their lives through added skills to succeed in the world of work and retain gainful employment throughout their lives for themselves, their families and especially their children.
We believe in a suit, a second chance. We have helped over 6,000 low-income, job-seeking men in the Houston area since 2004. How long have you been in business?
We started our services in June 2004 to help low-income men get back into the workforce by helping them initially land a job. We have suited over 5,000 low-income, job-ready men who needed a suit...a second chance to move from assistance towards self-sufficiency for themselves and their families.
What is your primary product or service?
We assist economically-disadvantaged, job-ready men in the greater Houston area during their job hunt. Clients are referred to us through approved agencies, schools and organizations who provide job-readiness and job-skills training to clients. Clients must be actively engaged in their job search with an upcoming job interview or job fair appointment to receive the their first suiting appointment.

How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The founder and founding team worked in various job prepration agencies and colleges that provided training for the undereducated, underserved, and unemployed male population in Houston. After the training was completed, we had no resources for our clients who had limited resources and needed assistance to receive interview-appropriate outfits so they could "ace the interview" and to be successful in their job hunt. Clients did not have the resources to buy a new outfit. We knew they needed to look their best for an employment interview or job fair in order to land the job, so we decided to start Career Gear Houston.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are the only organization that provides this service for men only. Also, our inventory is made up of brand new suits, as well as gently-used, contemporary business clothes donated by men's retailers, business' suit drives, and individuals.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one location that we just moved into in September 2012 which has helped us expand and provide better serve to our clients.

We are in the PlazAmericas Mall (formerly the Sharpstown Center Mall) off US 59S at Bellaire Blvd. on the southwest side of Houston, Texas. From US 59 coming in either direction, take the Bellaire Blvd. exit. If coming from Sugar Land traveling US59N, just follow the feeder and at the light at the intersection of Bellaire and take your first left onto Bellaire Drive. Once you have gone under the 59 overpasses, take your first right into the parking lot of the PlazAmericas Mall. If you are coming from Downtown or Galleria area travelling US59S, once you have exited, take a right at the first light (Bellaire Blvd.) and the an immediate right into the PlazAmericas Mall parking lot.
What type of payments do you accept?
We do not charge our clients or the agency that referred their clients. Instead we write grant proposals for these services to foundations and grantors at the local, state and federal levels. We also hold yearly fundraisers, and receive financial donations from businesses and individuals like yourself.

Which areas do you service?
We serve the greater Houston Metropolitan area including Harris, Ft. Bend, Montgomery, Galveston and all surrounding counties.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
We are 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that uses many volunteers and a very small staff to run our daily operations. We also have a Board of Directors and Advisory Boards that help with the stragetic planning, funding opportunities and logistic operations.
